In the event of an active shooter or any active deadly threat on campus, the decision about what course of action to take will be a matter of personal choice as well as factors including distance to the threat and other variables. °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ teaches the Run-Hide-Fight model, also known as Avoid-Deny and Defend.
An imminent threat means that violence is occurring, and people, are being killed or injured nearby. In this case, a person will have several options to help mitigate personal harm:
RUN (AVOID): If possible, a person should quickly move away from the last known area of the threat to a place where there is a reasonable assurance of safety. Taking steps to avoid the threat is the first and best line of defense.
HIDE (DENY): If leaving the area is not practical, attempt to conceal yourself where you are and if possible, prevent access to the area you are in. This may be accomplished by moving furniture in front of a door, turning off lights, staying low to the ground and muting cell phones.
FIGHT (DEFEND): If confronted with the threat, take immediate steps to defend yourself from bodily harm. Identify and use any objects available as weapons; do no fight fairly. If others are present, form a plan to take aggressive action to stop the threat.
Other safety recommendations applicable to active shooter situations:
Think about how you will respond if such an event occurs. Pre-planning and mental rehearsal are important preparations.
Be sure to sign up for the College's RAVE Alert system.
If possible, call 4349 on the main campus or 911 from any location on to report what is happening.
Evacuate in the direction of responding officers. Keep your hands up and visible at all times.
Do not stop to render aid or expect others to. Police will not render aid until the threat is eliminated. Remain concealed or shelter in place until police arrive and/or an all-clear message is given.
